DIY: Create a Dining Table from a Door

Looking for a versatile and affordable table? If you find an old solid shed door at the ReStore like we did, it's just the ticket!

What we were looking for: We wanted a very sturdy door with a rustic charm.

What we found:  We found this old large 80" x 32" door, 1.75" thick. Cost: $25

The project:

  1. Sand off the rough bits. We took the door to a large warehouse to sand both sides, and cleaning up frequently.
  2. We vacuumed and wiped down with a tack cloth.
  3. We purchased black plumbers pipe and screwed it into the door. It wasn't easy, this aged wood is hard!
  4. Large purchased locking casters were in line with the industrial look we were going for. Some might elect to paint the pipe, but we like it raw.
  5. We selected Annie Sloan chalk paint in Old White to paint the top side. Two coats. Then sanded it down to the desired transparency, gradually using finer grit sanpaper to get it smooth.
  6. Annie Sloan recommends their chalk paint wax as a finisher, but we wanted something more durable so we went with a semi-gloss Minwax polyurethane, sanding with progressively finer sandpaper between 3 applications.

Notice the doorknob hole? It makes for a great place to run light cords. The casters make it easy to move the table around depending on changing furniture configurations and space requirements. This table can also serve as a work table or a desk. We love the flexibility! It's super solid, too.
