We love working at The ReStore, but every once in awhile it’s good to get up close and personal to our Habitat mission. That’s why staff from our three stores are volunteering at the Glisan Gardens Habitat for Humanity build four days in October and November. The ReStore and Gist Brands are co-sponsoring one of the homes there, and we are psyched to do some team-building while working with and for Habitat families.
Site crews, homeowners and volunteers are working doubly hard with plans to get 12 families into their new energy-efficient digs before Christmas. Early on, there was almost a hitch in those plans when $3,000 in tools and construction materials were stolen from the site in April. But Parr Lumber stepped in, donating $2,500 worth of the necessary tools.
Looking at the 2-story cottagey townhomes now, a Habitat volunteer loads a wheelbarrow full of rocks and dirt dug up to make room for a young, orange-leafed vine maple. Another volunteer hammers away at a fence post–the beginnings of what will soon be small private backyard garden. Endless summer hydrangeas, scarlet trumpet honeysuckle, viburnum, salal, English lavender and Chinese dogwood are among the plantings. You can already imagine the children running in and out of their new homes, hurrying to meet a neighbor in the playground area.
The second phase of construction has already begun. When all is said and done, there will be a total of 25 hardworking families living in 25 sustainable homes built on the site at NE165th Avenue and Glisan. The 1.64-acre tract was purchased by Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East with the help of the City of Gresham and funds from the Housing and Urban Development.
