How a $2 chair launches local business

A $2 ReStore chair was really the start of it all.

When Sally and Andy Pella bought the $2 chair from The ReStore for their daughter’s dorm room, they sanded, painted and reupholstered the piece, then shared photos on Facebook. Friends said it was beautiful enough to sell, and that’s how Red Door Reclaimed was launched.! Now, only one year later, shows are calling Sally and Andy to get Red Door Reclaimed to exhibit.

At the Junk Refunk in Canby, the couple sold candle stands/wreath hangers, farmhouse-styled painted signs and a very cool Lego table upcycled from an old step table. Tables continue to be their biggest sellers. Sally said whenever possible they restore them, or if it’s beyond that-or in a 70s style-they will paint the legs, add a barn-wood top, perhaps, and transform it to trend, including using paint shades popular this year. According to Sally, the 2016 colors of choice include turquoise, mustard yellow and bold red. She scours through blogs and Pinterest, and takes advice from a resourceful neighbor as inspiration.

“It’s really been a lesson in interior design,” Sally said, speaking with us on a Monday junking day. (The ReStore remains in her regular rounds, we’re delighted to say.)

On one of those days two months ago, Sally found a cute old toy box.

“It was beat up, but had good bones, probably from the 50s-quite old,” she recalls.

After sanding it all down, Sally painted it in gray (also an extremely popular today shade), added a tree of lights cameo silhouette decal, and voila! Another masterpiece of charm.
