The Clark County Habitat Store is gearing up for our fall workshops!
Workshop dates are Saturdays, October 16, October 30 and November 13, from 1pm to 3pm.

October 16, 2010: (Rescheduled from October 2.) Session 1 will focus on exterior weatherization. Topics will include window and door installation, exterior trim install, correct caulking, sealing and house-wrap installation.

October 30, 2010: Session 2 will focus on sheetrock installation and correct taping and mudding procedures.

November 13, 2010: Session 3 topics will include interior painting processes and baseboard and trim installation.

John_SchwagerAll sessions will be taught by awesome trade professionals! Our lead instructor will be John Schwager, a local contractor and Restore customer. John is a great guy and we’re sure you will learn lots from him.

Plan to join us for all three sessions or just the one that fits your project needs. Sessions are informal and very interactive so come ready to participate, learn and network with like-minded “do it yourselfers.”

Meet Krista Baumgarten

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

KristaMeet Krista Baumgarten! She has been volunteering at the Clark County store since December of last year. It’s rare that you find someone who already works 40 hours a week, Monday thru Friday, who is still willing to show up first thing on a Saturday morning to volunteer – every single week! Krista has a great attitude, and the customers love her.

Krista was motivated to volunteer at the Habitat ReStore because she appreciated Habitat for Humanity’s mission for building simple, affordable homes for low income families. Her favorite thing about the Habitat ReStore is the customers, and she loves to hear about what projects they’re working on and how they are creatively using items found at the restore for reuse.

Krista_wine_rackShe was recently inspired by a tile workshop that we hosted back in January and has been working on a beautiful tile top wine rack with a canary wood base. This project unleashed a love for woodworking, and fortunately Krista has a friend with a wood shop that has been showing her the ropes. Now, she is slowly building her own woodworking artillery by purchasing tools that come into the Habitat ReStore. I bet you 6 months ago she’d never have believed she would be the owner of a radial arm saw! She has also recently purchased a piece of granite that she plans on turning into a chess board.

Krista’s enthusiasm and positive attitude are inspiring, and it has been such a joy getting to know her.  We hope to have her around for a LONG time!

April Habitat ReStore Workshop Recap

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Hopefully you’ve heard about or seen info on our website about the workshops we’ve been holding at the store. They are in the infant stages now but we hope they grow quickly and are of great use to you as DIYers! (do it yourselfers. )

In April, the workshops featured techniques for tile installation. The first session focused on countertops, bull nose edges, backsplashes and prepping for sink installation. Wet saw cutting, use of thin set, grouting and caulking were all covered by the instructor. The second session included the laying out and installation of tile on shower walls. Again wet saw techniques, installation and grouting were taught.

Thirty-five “doers” attended the sessions. All had a great time and learned tons from tile pros Doug and Yvette Ramirez of Interstate Tile. Thanks, Doug and Yvette, for volunteering your time and making the inaugural classes such a great success!

We hope to have one more tile class that will cover the laying out of a floor, underlayment install, backer board techniques and the setting and grouting of the floor tiles. Be watching for the dates and times of this class.
